Words

Words are important. They build up. They comfort. They misdirect. They tear down.

Words either create or destroy. This past week, I saw both. A word formed in anger, shot to kill. The wound was deep. A word meant to cover up a lack of effort, drove a wedge into a relationship. A word of encouragement that lead someone to see God afresh after decades of isolation. A word that made a loss more bearable.

Scripture reminds us of the truth about words and our call to employ them judiciously

o       God creates with words

o       And God said, "Let there be light," Genesis 1:3

o       Jesus is the Word of God

o       In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1

o       Jesus sustains with his word

o       he sustains all things by his powerful word. Hebrews 1:3b

o       Words destroy

o       The tongue also is a fire….sets the whole course of one's life on fire…James 3:6

o       A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends. Proverbs 16:28

o       Words cut both ways

o       The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them. Proverbs 12:6

How will you create (or destroy) with words today?
